Overview
Dora Maar and Jacqueline Lamba, Antibes, August 1939
Dora Maar and Jacqueline Lamba, Antibes, August 1939

On the occasion of the Surrealism Centenary, Galerie Boquet and Galerie Pauline Pavec are pleased to present a joint exhibition across their two spaces: Jacqueline Lamba, Dora Maar, Celles qui avancent, highlighting the intertwined journeys of these two women artists whose friendship spanned the 20th century.

This dual exhibition is part of the Paris Surréaliste gallery trail, organized by the Comité Professionnel des Galeries d’Art and the Centre Pompidou in conjunction with the exhibition Surréalisme at the Centre Pompidou (September 4, 2024 – January 13, 2025).

Enriched with numerous archives and photographs, this exhibition brings together works from the 1930s to the 1970s—from Surrealism to Abstraction—including rare and previously unseen pieces by both artists: a unique fold-out sketchbook by Dora Maar featuring a series of portraits of Jacqueline Lamba, major paintings by Lamba, and ink landscapes by both artists that share striking formal parallels.

Jacqueline Lamba and Dora Maar met in 1926 at the Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs and remained close throughout pivotal moments in their lives, notably during the summer of 1939, when Dora Maar took iconic photographs of Jacqueline Lamba alongside portraits of the young Aube Breton.

Accompanied by a catalogue with essays by the artists' biographers—Victoria Combalia for Dora Maar (art historian, critic, professor at the University of Barcelona, PhD in Art History, and curator) and Alba Romano Pace for Jacqueline Lamba (art historian, curator, and professor at the Albertina Academy of Fine Arts in Turin)—this exhibition highlights the vital role of these two women artists. Far more than mere witnesses, they were key figures whose artistic explorations reflect the major shifts in 20th-century art.

The other part of the exhibition can be viewed starting September 12 at Galerie Pauline Pavec, 4 rue de Jarente, 75004 Paris.
